ReStory Cleaning Not Working? 0% and Sonic Cleaner Troubleshooting

Check hidden dirt, component cleaning progress, correct Sonic Cleaner use, and the current status of 0% or stuck-part bugs in ReStory.

If a repair will not complete, first assume that one dirty component, reverse side, or small panel has been missed. ReStory tracks cleaning at component level, and a part can remain at Remove dirt: 99% even when it looks finished.

If the selected component genuinely stays at 0%, or a part cannot be retrieved from the sonic bath after a completed cycle, you may be outside the verified normal path. Some gadgets becoming stuck in the sonic bath are on the developers’ official August 7 Known Issues list. There is no verified universal recovery as of August 8, 2026.

Normal manual-cleaning flow

1. Read the work order

Cleaning is a requested service, not a visual guess. Check the paper job card or to-do list and identify which device tasks remain incomplete.

2. Disassemble the device into inspectable components

Outer surfaces are not the whole job. Remove the required covers, panels, boards, and small components so each part can be selected and inspected. Keep the layout organized so a small customer part is not confused with storage or donor inventory.

3. Select the actual dirty component

Full-release footage shows progress attached to an individual component. A joystick circuit board displays Remove dirt: 99%, confirming that cleaning is not a single device-wide animation.

If nothing changes, check that the dirt requirement belongs to the part currently selected. Cleaning the device shell will not finish a dirty circuit board or side panel.

4. Check both sides and narrow edges

A continuous full-release playthrough shows a repair being blocked because a dirty side panel remained. The player returns to the missed component before the job can be completed.

Use this checklist:

  • rotate the component;
  • inspect its reverse side;
  • check thin borders and corners;
  • look for another panel or cover with a dirt indicator;
  • confirm that no small loose part remains off-screen or under another component.

5. Recheck the task list before reassembly

Do not install the final cover only because the visible surface looks clean. Confirm that every cleaning requirement is complete first. If the job still fails, reopen the component list and look for the remaining dirt-marked item.

Why cleaning can appear stuck at 99%

The visible percentage is a completion requirement, not an approximation. A part at 99% is still incomplete. The remaining dirt may be on the opposite side, a narrow edge, or a small area obscured by the current angle.

The safe response is to rotate and reinspect the same component, then check whether another dirty component also remains. Do not immediately reload the save or purchase a replacement when the UI still shows measurable progress.

Cleaning remains at 0%

Reports describe situations where the cleaning sound plays but dirt does not disappear. Because some discussion history began during the Demo and later received release-window replies, we cannot assume every 0% report has the same cause in the full release.

Before classifying it as a bug:

  1. Confirm that the work order asks for Clean.
  2. Select the loose part carrying the dirt requirement.
  3. Use the normal cleaning interaction shown by the current UI.
  4. Rotate the part and try the marked surface rather than the device body.
  5. Check whether a different component has the active requirement.

If the correct selected part still stays at 0%, record the device, component, day, and input method. That is a Community reported / Needs reproduction state. Reinstalling, changing computers, or repeatedly reloading has not been verified as a universal fix.

How to use the Sonic Cleaner normally

The automatic cleaner is an upgrade for loose dirty parts. Continuous launch-build footage verifies this normal sequence:

  1. Buy and place the ultrasonic/sonic cleaner upgrade.
  2. Put several dirty loose components inside; the first observed model supports up to six parts.
  3. Start the cleaning cycle.
  4. Wait for the visible countdown to finish.
  5. Select and remove each cleaned component after completion.
  6. Return the parts to the workbench and continue reassembly.

The normal cycle does not automatically rebuild the device, return parts to storage, or finish the customer order. Retrieval is a separate step.

Part stuck in the Sonic Cleaner

The developers’ August 7 Known Issues list says that some gadgets can become stuck in the sonic bath. This confirms the general issue, but it does not identify every affected part or provide a public recovery procedure.

Use this distinction:

  • Timer still running: wait; the part is not ready for normal retrieval.
  • Timer complete and part selectable: remove it normally.
  • Timer complete but part cannot be selected or removed: this matches the acknowledged stuck-gadget issue category.
  • Part is no longer visible anywhere: this resembles community missing-part reports and still needs device-specific reproduction.

Do not claim that save/reload restores the part. One launch-window report says restarting did not restore a missing Eggotchi battery. That is one report, not a universal failure rule, but it is enough to prevent us from publishing reload as a verified fix.

There is one limited recovery lead. In a current-release discussion, a player reported that a missing top cover appeared on the cursor after they clicked and dragged the ultrasonic bath itself. This is a single successful report, not a reproduced fix. Because it uses an ordinary in-game interaction, it is reasonable to try once before submitting a bug report, but this page cannot promise it will recover a different component or order.

Other reports describe small parts falling behind the cleaner or into the cabinet recess. The Notebook can help identify which part is missing or still dirty, but it does not move the part. Switching to another order also failed to free the item in one multi-player discussion. Claims about the exact drop trigger remain community hypotheses.

What to do when a customer part is missing

No consequence-free recovery has been verified. Preserve enough information for a useful report:

  1. Note the customer device and exact missing component.
  2. Record whether the cleaner timer completed.
  3. Check the workbench, Notebook, and normal inventory views without dismantling unrelated devices.
  4. Optionally try clicking and dragging the bath once; this is a single-case community attempt, not a verified fix.
  5. Capture a screenshot of the cleaner and job card.
  6. Keep the affected save available.
  7. Check the official Steam news feed for a patch newer than August 8, 2026.
  8. Submit the case through the official bug-reporting channel.

Do not buy a replacement and describe that as a fix unless the game actually accepts it for the customer job and the full consequence has been verified.

Cleaning problem or Firmware problem?

Repair, Clean, and Update Firmware are separate job-card services. A successful cleaning cycle does not complete Firmware, and a firmware tool does not remove dirt. Finish each requested line independently and confirm that it is crossed out.

Why will ReStory not let me finish cleaning?

The most common verified cause is a missed dirty component or surface. Inspect all loose parts, rotate them, and look for another panel or board that still has a dirt requirement.

Is 99% clean enough?

No. Full-release footage shows component cleaning at 99%, and the job still requires the remaining dirt to be removed.

How many parts fit in the Sonic Cleaner?

The first observed ultrasonic cleaner upgrade is described and shown with a six-part capacity in launch-build footage. Later upgrades or patches may differ.
