Later, the shop also offers a Shredder intended to turn broken or useless parts into money.
For Marketplace devices, the displayed Sell price is not guaranteed net profit. Treat it as potential revenue. Your real recorded result must subtract the device purchase, replacement parts, and any other cost that belongs to that transaction. Permanent licenses, tools, and decor appear separately in the day summary and should not be silently charged to one device.

Where to buy replacement parts
The in-game parts website is Packuten. Use the device family and component name shown by the work order or disassembly view, then compare the available replacement with parts already in storage.
Before buying, check four things:
- the replacement belongs to the correct device model;
- the customer order actually requires Repair rather than only Clean or Firmware;
- you do not already own a working compatible part;
- a Marketplace donor is not the more useful option for this specific job.
Buying the exact part is the cleanest accounting path because its price can be recorded directly against the repair. It is not always the cheapest path, especially when a low-cost donor contains several reusable components.
How donor devices work
A Marketplace device can be purchased for one of two different goals:
- repair the complete device and sell it;
- dismantle it and keep its working components as donor parts.
Launch-build footage verifies a simple donor example. A nonworking flashlight is listed for ¥1,000, purchased, dismantled, and used to supply a working bulb for a customer flashlight. The remaining reusable components are kept for later.
The safe donor workflow is:
- read the customer device’s missing or broken-part requirement;
- identify the exact component you need;
- inspect a compatible Marketplace listing;
- buy the donor only after comparing its price with a direct Packuten part;
- dismantle the donor carefully;
- move the working component into the customer repair;
- place reusable leftovers in the parts box rather than discarding them.
The ¥1,000 in this example is a verified donor acquisition cost, not a complete repair-profit figure. The footage does not provide a separate final net value for the flashlight job.
Keep donor parts organized
Loose components are future inventory, but only if you can identify them. Keep donor parts separate from the active customer’s pieces and use the parts box or later storage upgrades.
Good storage prevents three avoidable problems:
- losing a customer component among donor leftovers;
- buying a replacement you already own;
- dismantling another device because the correct stored part was overlooked.
A working component has option value: it can save the full price of a future direct purchase. That does not mean every part should be hoarded forever. Storage is limited, and later systems provide a way to convert genuinely useless pieces into cash.
What “scrapping” means in the current release
Players often use “scrap” for two different actions:
- Dismantling a donor device to recover reusable components.
- Processing broken or unwanted loose parts through the later Shredder system.
These are not the same decision. Dismantling preserves any parts you remove. Shredding is presented as a way to turn broken or useless parts into money.
The formal-release Home Depot screen shows three tiers:

These store descriptions verify the purpose and launch-build prices. One current Bug Reports post describes dropping an item into the Shredder, which supports a likely direct-drop interaction, but that single report does not establish which parts are accepted or whether the item produced money. The current evidence has not traced a complete loading-to-payout sequence, compared payouts between tiers, or established a per-part return formula. Do not buy an upgrade based on an invented payback period.
How to read a Marketplace listing
Formal-release footage shows Marketplace rows with several decision fields:

One observed launch-build listing shows a purchase price of ¥3,900 and a displayed Sell price of ¥54,000, with a license requirement. The visible spread is:
¥54,000 - ¥3,900 = ¥50,100 gross spread
That is not verified net profit. Replacement parts, the listing’s actual condition, an applicable license, and completion of the sale were not followed continuously for that device.
Customer orders and Marketplace resale use different ledgers
For a customer or online order, you already have a promised payout. The useful per-job number is the payout minus replacement components and other costs that belong only to that job.
For an owned Marketplace device, you pay an acquisition cost first and receive income only if the repaired device is actually sold. The useful recorded result is:
actual sale income - device purchase - replacement parts - other transaction-specific costs
The formal-release end-of-day summary supports this separation. It lists positive categories for Repair Orders, Online Orders, and Sales, and negative categories for Devices, Parts, Licenses, and Decor, followed by a daily Total and account Balance.
Because that summary aggregates the whole day, it cannot automatically tell you which parts cost belongs to one device. If you want a true per-device number, record purchases as they happen.
Why launch profit numbers may change
In a current Steam discussion, a ReStory developer confirmed that device flipping is an encouraged gameplay path. The developer also said the launch economy was deliberately generous in order to encourage more players to use the system and that it would be rebalanced after observing release behavior.
This verifies the design direction, not a permanent multiplier. It also makes a static launch-price database risky: a future balance patch may change Marketplace prices, repair costs, or returns. Record the date or visible game version with any calculator example and prefer player-entered values over hard-coded “best device” claims.
A simple player ledger that does not guess
Use one row per device:

- Recorded cost: device purchase + replacement parts + other direct costs.

- Break-even sale price: recorded cost for an owned Marketplace device.
This arithmetic is transparent, but it is not presented as ReStory’s hidden internal formula. A permanent license or shop upgrade benefits multiple future jobs; automatically assigning its full price to one repair can make that device look artificially unprofitable.
Common reasons a repair looks more profitable than it is
Counting Sell price before the sale
A displayed Sell price is a forecast field. Record it as expected revenue, not actual cash, until the transaction completes.
Ignoring replacement parts
A cheap broken device can need several expensive components. Diagnose before treating the buy/sell gap as usable margin.
Charging every upgrade to one device
Licenses, tools, storage, decor, and the Shredder can affect many days. Keep them visible as shop-level spending unless you deliberately choose an allocation method.
Giving stored parts a value of zero
A donor component may have been purchased earlier as part of another device. “No cash spent today” does not always mean the part was free. For a casual in-game decision, zero-current-cash cost is useful; for a precise profit ledger, add a note about where the part came from.
Destroying a resale option too early
Once a device is broken into donors or its parts are shredded, you may lose the option to repair and sell it whole. Identify the needed component and compare both paths before dismantling.
